How it works
Local practices
One evening a week, a few minutes from Poor Farm Park.
Small squads
Subs roll on and off through the game, so everyone gets plenty of time on the court.
Futsal RVA
Games are at Henrico Sports and Entertainment Center and Hill City.
What's included
- US Youth Futsal registration
- Futsal RVA league fees and referees
- One indoor training session each week at Liberty Middle School, December into early February
- Expert futsal instruction from ATFC coaching staff
- Training equipment
Liam Hogan is the futsal program director. Coaching is assigned across ATFC staff depending on how many teams we form.
$400 if your player is already with ATFC. $500 if they're coming from another club, which covers the $100 futsal kit. The kit is theirs to keep.
You're not charged anything to apply. We sort the squads first, then send payment details. We can split it monthly, and if cost is the thing standing in the way, just ask.
Who can play
Age groups and who can apply
U9 and U10 are open to boys and girls. At U11, U12 and U13 we can only offer boys groups this winter.
Age groups follow US Club Soccer cutoffs, September 1 to August 31, and we may combine groups depending on how many sign up. Put a date of birth into the form and it'll tell you the group.
If we haven't got a group that fits this winter, we'd still like to hear from you. Email info@ashlandtown.com and we'll get in touch if we're able to add it another season.
Why futsal
Futsal is small-sided soccer on a hard court, with a smaller ball that doesn't bounce much. A lot of the best players in the world grew up playing it, and much of the world still uses it through the winter.
What we like about it:
- Plenty of touches in a small space.
- Tight angles, so players get quicker at reading what's in front of them.
- It feeds back into the outdoor game. Players come into the spring season sharp on the ball.
It's a bridge through the winter while the outdoor seasons are on a break, and it's completely optional. It doesn't replace anything and nobody's expected to sign up.
Common questions
Who coaches it?
Liam Hogan is the futsal program director. Coaching is handled by ATFC staff, with assignments depending on how many teams we end up forming.
When do I need to apply by?
Wednesday, October 28. We build the squads from whoever's applied, so the sooner we hear from you the better the age groups work out.
What is futsal?
Five a side on a hard court with a smaller, heavier ball that hardly bounces. Fewer players, less space, and a lot of time on the ball.
How do the teams work?
We're expecting three or four ATFC teams this winter depending on numbers, with seven to ten players each. Teams go by age group, though we may combine groups depending on sign-ups.
Where are the games?
Most are at Henrico Sports and Entertainment Center or Hill City (U-Turn). We'll send the full fixture list once squads are set.
When and where are practices?
Liberty Middle School gym, 6:15 to 7:45pm. Mondays for U9 and U10, Wednesdays for U11, U12 and U13. Nothing on school holidays or closures.
How long does it run?
December into early February, between the fall and spring outdoor seasons.
What shoes does my player need?
Flat-soled indoor trainers. No studs, no blades, nothing that'll mark the floor. Shin guards as usual.
My player has never played futsal. What's different?
A few things take getting used to. Substitutions happen on the fly while the game is still running. Kick-ins replace throw-ins. There's no offside, and the ball is smaller and heavier so it stays on the floor.
It plays a bit like a cross between outdoor soccer and basketball. Most players have it sorted after a game or two.
